A Salt-Spray Number Is Not a Coastal Furniture Specification
Read corrosion reports in context: specimen, finish, exposure and evaluation matter more than an isolated test-hour claim.

Coastal exposure is a complete-product question
A hotel buyer may receive a reassuring statement that a frame passed a certain number of salt-spray hours. That number can be useful, but only after the test conditions and the tested product are understood.
Furniture works as an assembly. Frames, fasteners, joints, feet and attachments may all need attention in an exposed location. The procurement task is to understand how the proposed assembly addresses its environment, then define what the property will inspect and maintain. A single number should not replace that conversation.
Read what the test actually establishes
ASTM B117 describes the operation of salt-spray apparatus. Its published guidance cautions that stand-alone salt-spray results have seldom correlated with performance in natural environments. It does not itself choose a product-specific exposure period or explain how every result should be interpreted.
For purchasing, that means test hours should not be converted directly into years beside the sea. Ask which standard and edition were used, what was tested, how exposure was controlled and which evaluation criteria were applied. Compare reports on a like-for-like basis rather than treating the largest number as an automatic winner.
Match the report to the proposed specification
Request the report identity, issuing laboratory, date, specimen description, preparation, finish and recorded result. Check whether the document concerns a coating panel, a component or an assembled product. Those scopes answer different questions.
Then connect the document to the quotation. Does the proposed material and finish match the tested specification? Are important components outside that scope? If the supplier changes a finish, hardware or construction detail, ask whether the existing evidence remains applicable. A relevant document is more valuable than a large collection of unrelated certificates.
Inspect the details that the main photograph omits
Ask for accessible views of joints, connection points, tube openings, underside surfaces and replaceable feet. Discuss drainage, cleaning access, finish continuity and any precautions around components of different materials. Have the supplier explain the details rather than inferring them from a distant image.
Record how accidental coating damage should be identified and addressed. Confirm which cleaning products and tools are suitable for the actual finish. The purpose is not to invent a universal coastal construction rule, but to obtain a maintainable design with responsibilities that your team understands.
Define the operating environment in the brief
State whether the furniture will stand on an open beachfront, under a covered terrace or beside a chlorinated pool. Include the intended exposure, cleaning routine, storage arrangements and how often pieces will be moved. Location alone does not describe every condition.
Ask the supplier to review that brief and identify limitations. Require a care and inspection plan that matches the delivered assembly. If a claim depends on particular upkeep, make sure the necessary time, tools and access are available before treating that claim as a purchasing advantage.
Buy evidence you can connect to a product
SUNNY Furniture provides applicable product reports and certificates on inquiry. Start with the selected model and destination, then ask which documents apply to the quoted configuration. Do not assume that a mark displayed in a company documentation section covers every item in the catalog.
A useful approval record links the model, construction, finish, relevant reports and care instructions. That record gives purchasing a defensible comparison and gives operations something practical to use. The objective is a well-specified coastal furniture system, not an impressive test number detached from the delivered product.
